Peoria schools consider cutting football program, school paper

All non-mandated programs are on the chopping block, including the school newspaper and high school football program.

PEORIA, Illinois — The Peoria's School District's answer to state budget problems could be to cut all sports activities. All non-mandated programs are on the chopping block, including the school newspaper and high school football program.

While administrators say they aren't at that point just yet, they want to lay out a worst case scenario so everyone understands the financial problems.

"We have been working the past couple of years to cut the fat, all the programs we don't need, all those extra things you don't need," said Mike McKenzie.

The district faces a $9 million budget deficit if it doesn't receive funding from the state by the start of the next school year.
