DAVENPORT, Iowa — Hundreds of people visited the first annual Algonquin River Powwow of Champions at Credit Island Park. The powwow consisted of dancing competitions and live music. There were also vendor booths set up at the park for people visiting the powwow.
Conrad Brown organized the event. He recently moved from Tama, Iowa to the Quad Cities.
"I've been living here for about a year, and I don't see native people here. So, the idea that came to me is to hold an event where I can bring all the people that used to live along this river and bring them back here to have a celebration," said Brown.
There were over 100 dancers involved in the powwow from tribes across the United States and Canada.
The Algonquin River Powwow of Champions collects proceeds to be donated to the Mississippi River Indian Alliance of the Quad Cities. Brown said it is his hope that one day enough funds will be raised to build a Native American Center in the Quad Cities.
