DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Dubuque has ended the boil advisory it issued after a water main break that loosed an estimated 3.3 million gallons of water.

The city water department said Thursday that water samples taken since Tuesday’s break show no contamination of the system.

Officials say city workers responded to the break around 1:30 a.m. Tuesday and a boil advisory was issued about nine hours later.

Water distribution supervisor Brant Schueller says a joint in the 20-inch diameter main was pulled apart. Staffers think it could have been related to nearby construction.

Repairs to the break were finished by 5 p.m.
