The attempted arrests of two people in Galena, Illinois went sour when police say the pair tried to get away, leading to an officer-involved shooting and a search that closed a roadway.

Overnight on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, officers with the Jo Daviess County Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) tried to apprehend 27-year-old Andrew Joseph Cummings and 32-year-old Crystal Lynn McLaughlin at the Grant Hills Motel, police said.

Police said in a statement that Cummings and McLaughlin were wanted out of San Bernardino County, California on felony warrants for assault.

"While attempting to apprehend the suspects, a weapon was displayed to the Jo Daviess County CIRT," read a statement from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff's Department.  Cummings and McLaughlin then got into a Dodge truck they had been using, and tried to get away.  The truck was later found to have been stolen.

The truck hit a police vehicle and an officer, the statement said.   Another officer was dragged when the truck took off "at a fast rate," said the statement.

Police said two shots were fired at the fleeing truck; one bullet hit and disabled the front passenger side tire, and the other hit the driver's side door.

The suspects headed westbound on Highway 20 until the truck wouldn't drive anymore, according to the statement.  It was found just east of Highway 20 and Gear Street at the old Ron's Amoco BP station.

"The two suspects then fled on foot into a wooded area," read the statement.

An active investigation into the matter was announced around 4 a.m.  Police were saying the suspects had been seen on foot in the area where the truck was left behind, according to an earlier statement.

Around 5:45 a.m., police announced that both Cummings and McLaughlin were in custody.  They ended up getting caught in the wooded area, police said, and were held at the Jo Daviess County Jail awaiting a bond hearing and pending charges.

The officers that were injured by the Dodge truck were treated and released.

The Northern Illinois Major Case Squad was continuing the investigation into the officer-involved shooting.

During the search, police said they shut down US Highway 20 between Gear Street and Bench Street (Riverside Drive).  Traffic was rerouted onto Gear Street.
