SHERRARD, Illinois — Getting ready for prom took a whole new meaning for students at Sherrard High School, but the school had one more important lesson to teach before the big day.
Operation prom is a very detailed reenactment of a prom night gone wrong. The idea is to turn kids away from drinking and driving by showing them exactly what happens in a fatal car crash involving a drunk driver.
In 2015 about a third of all fatal car crashes in Illinois involved a drunk driver between the ages of 21 and 24. Teaching students this lesson as early as possible may help bring this number down.
For student Korie Morrison, Wednesday's demonstration sent a powerful message.
" I think this could open up everyone's eyes to what can actually happen and its not just in the books it actually happens to people and I think it will really help them stop or not even think about doing this anymore," she says.
A life long lesson learned just in time for an important day.
Sherrard High School will have prom May 7.
