Iowa City center caring for 42 seized ducks

20 of the ducks found in an Iowa City man’s van have died but the remaining 42 are being cared for by the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — 20 of the ducks found in an Iowa City man's van have died but the remaining 42 are being cared for by the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center.

Liz Ford, shelter supervisor, says the center is working on getting custody of the ducks. Right now, they are considered part of a criminal investigation and are not to be viewed by the public, according to KCRG.

Francis Prohaska, 69, was charged on Monday with one count of animal neglect. Initial reports say the ducks were in stacked cages and covered in feces and feathers. There was no food or water available to the birds and it was the stench coming from the Uhaul van that prompted an investigation.

The investigation is still ongoing and more charges could be filed. It's unclear why Prohaska had the ducks.
