MOLINE, Illinois — A junior at Moline High School was honored with the Governor’s Volunteer Service Award at the Old State Capitol.

Saneha Borisuth was presented with the award April 13 from the Serve Illinois Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service. The award recognizes volunteers and programs that make a difference in Illinois and highlights the importance of community service.

Twenty-five Illinoisans and five businesses received the award.

Borisuth was nominated by Rep. Pat Verschoore for her work with the Moline Sports Unlimited Club. Borisuth is both the founder and President of the club, which “pairs special needs students with student-athletes to develop friendships and increase student involvement through non-competitive activities.”

The club meets weekly and has hosted events such as carnival games, sports events, a Halloween dance and indoor obstacle courts. Most recently, the club partnered with a grocery store and collected bags and school supplies to send to Syria via the Syrian Orphans Organization.

“The Moline school community is extremely proud of Saneha for recognizing the benefits of and then leading in the creation of the Sports Unlimited Club. Moline High School is fortunate to have Saneha, as well as many other students, actively seeking ways to enhance our community.” said Dan McGuire, Principal.

In addition, Borisuth has also participated in the Quad City Youth Symphony Orchestra, youth philanthropic organization Teens for Tomorrow and the Special Olympics Polar Plunge event.
