Chloe Stewart, 16, is making a great first impression.

The Galesburg High junior is competing in the Great Galesburg Shake.

It's a district-wide competition to build social skills and confidence.

"How to act professional," she said.  "How to be professional in front of a bunch of adults."

In Wednesday's first round at Galesburg High School, students like Jacob Williams, 18, get a few minutes to connect with judges.

Williams, who expects to study marketing and communications in college, understands the value of these exercises.

"I think it's really important," he said.  "Establishing relations and connections for when I get out of college."

Inspired by a program in Atlanta at the Ron Clark Academy, the Galesburg version is in its second year.

It's a way to blend classroom and real-life skills.

That's crucial, whether students are applying for college or interviewing for a job.

Nearly 100 4th through 12th graders are participating this year.

Organizers say it's never too early to start.

"A good handshake and eye contact, that creates a good foundation for when they leave us," said Jodie McNally, an outreach worker in District 205.

Community leaders donate their time to work with the kids.

While the process is understandably nerve-racking, these business volunteers are teaching valuable lessons.

"To see how engaging and animated these young persons are, it's really, really amazing," said John Hunigan, an independent living advocate in Galesburg.

Chloe Stewart is embracing the lessons.

She says that the tools will eventually help her to become a teacher one day.

"The professional aspect of it is amazing, especially for the kids," she said.

Five finalists will get to enjoy a special mystery prize.

"We're all working together in building these skills," McNally concluded.  "It brings the whole town closer together."

And, they're sealing the deal with a "Great Galesburg Shake."
