Skull recovered in human remains found on Big Island

Investigators are hoping testing will reveal the identify of human remains found on Big Island in Milan.

MILAN, Illinois – Investigators are hoping testing will reveal the identify of human remains found on Big Island in Milan.

“What we really don’t know is who it is, how they died, and when? That’s the mystery,” said Rock Island County Sheriff Gerry Bustos.

A man searching for turtle shells found a bone along the river on the island, and called police. More bones were discovered by search crews over the weekend.

“We believe we have a human skull and were able to locate what we believe is a pelvis, these are just bones, no clothing,” said Sheriff Bustos.

Bustos added the bones appear to be that of an adult.

Police are waiting for results on dental records and DNA testing, and are looking through missing persons databases and talking with local agencies with outstanding missing persons cases.

“We’re very confident with what we have we’re going to be able to hopefully identify somebody here in the future,” he said.
