DUBUQUE, Iowa – A former part-time employee at the City of Dubuque Carnegie-Stout Public Library pleaded guilty to theft.
When library officials noticed that a deposit made in April of 2014 wasn’t as much as expected, an internal investigation was launched, according to State of Iowa Auditor Mary Mosiman.
“A library official also identified an unusually large number of “No Sale” transactions recorded on the Library’s cash register tape by Barbara Nyheim… for the same day,” read Mosiman’s report.
A special investigation for a six-year period from July of 2008 to April of 2014 mirrored the internal investigation, which found that more than $52,500 went undeposited, the report said.
The Dubuque Police Department reviewed records from July of 2012 through April of 2014 and charged Nyheim with first-degree theft, Mosiman’s report said (it was noted that the City of Dubuque didn’t have records from before 2012).
Nyheim pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution to the library, as well as a fine and court costs, according to the report.
