Moline boy finds GoPro on vacation, tracks down mystery owners

An Iowa family has been reunited with their lost GoPro thanks to an 8-year-old from Moline.

MOLINE, Illinois — An Iowa family has been reunited with their lost GoPro thanks to an 8-year-old from Moline.

Just a few weeks ago, Will Wren was vacationing with his family in Florida. While walking back to the beach house, he spotted something unusual washed up on shore.

"I was just like, 'Dad, what is this?' So, I picked it up. It looked like a video camera. Then, I was thinking, 'Really?' Cause I think that's really rare," said Wren.

Will had discovered a GoPro video camera, and now, he wanted to try and find its owner.

"I thought it would take about a year," said Wren.

The Wrens retrieved a picture from the GoPro and posted it on Facebook. The photo showed the mystery family at an Iowa State basketball game, and soon, people from across the country were sharing the social media post.

"When we brought it back, I thought, 'There's no way.' But when we realized that they were from Iowa, I thought, 'You know, we might have a chance of finding them, being in the Quad Cities,'" said Aimee Wren, Will's mom.

In less than 24 hours, the GoPro's owners had messaged the Wren family. They lived just a few hours away in West Des Moines, Iowa.

"She texted me and said, 'Your GoPro's been found.' And I was just sitting here, and I looked at my phone like, 'What?!'" said Lisa Farrell.

"No way this happened. Like, what are the odds of that happening?" said daughter Molly Farrell.

As it turns out, Molly had lost the camera while playing in the ocean, just 2.2 miles from where the Wren's were staying in Florida.

The GoPro was returned, and Molly sent Will a Lego's set to say 'thank you.'

"It was the right thing to do," said Will.
