FARMINGTON, Illinois — Police say a man reportedly involved in a domestic battery incident was shot in an officer-involved shooting while he was physically fighting the officer.

It all started when someone called 911 about an alleged domestic battery incident around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2016.  Southeast of town, a Farmington Police officer found a suspect vehicle on Park Road, about a quarter-mile west of Light Foot Road, and tried to make a traffic stop.

When the officer told the suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Austin E. Foster, to get out of the vehicle, he “charged the officer and began striking the officer in the head,” said a statement from Illinois State Police.

“The suspect continued to fight with the officer and took the officer to the ground,” the statement said. “While on top of the officer, the suspect continued to strike the officer in the head/face.”

The two struggled until the officer fired a shot into the Foster’s upper leg/groin, police said.

Foster was taken to the hospital for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, police said. The officer was evaluated, treated and released.

As of Monday, April 4, Foster was still in the hospital, but police announced on Tuesday that he had been booked into the Fulton County Jail. Foster was charged with attempted murder of a peace officer, aggravated battery to a peace officer, disarming a peace officer, and domestic battery.  His bond was set at $750,000.

An investigation was underway by Zone 4 Investigations and the Farmington Police Department.
