DAVENPORT, Iowa -- Parents are trying to figure out who is going to pay the medical bills from the pepper spray incident that sent two dozen kids to the hospital from a Davenport school.

A can of pepper spray went off in the cafeteria at Williams Intermediate on Friday, April 1, 2016. Dawn Saul, the school's communication director, said 26 students were taken to the hospital by ambulance following complaints of respiratory issues.

On Monday, April 4, Saul said that parents could file claims through their private insurance carrier or through individual insurance that was purchased for students at the beginning of the school year.

Saul also said the school district was checking with the district's insurance provider to see if there were any other options.

Davenport Police were continuing to investigate the incident into Monday.

Any parents who have questions were encouraged to call Principal Garet Egel or Associate Principal Cory VanDeWalle.
