CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Teachers Union has released details of how it will conduct a citywide walkout and rallies this week to call attention to school funding and contract negotiations.

Union officials say union members will picket at every school Friday, April 1. There also will be demonstrations for higher wages for fast food workers and rallies outside City Hall, the Cook County jail and Chicago State University.

American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten is expected to participate.

Teachers voted earlier this month to walk off the job and close the schools for the day in a battle with district officials about funding and a new contract. The union’s 27,000 members have been working without a new contract since June 30.

The nation’s third-largest school district has roughly 400,000 students.
