PEKIN, Ill. (AP) — Agriculture experts say the unseasonably warm weather much of Illinois has seen in March could mean an early bug hatch. And that could be a good thing.
Doug Godke is manager of the Farm Bureau in Tazewell County in central Illinois. He tells the Pekin Daily Times that farmers are already starting to see bugs such as Asian and Japanese beetles.
Godke says that timing is unusual. And there may not yet be enough plant growth for bugs to eat.
Godke says that could mean the early hatch of bugs dies off soon and leaves fewer eggs to hatch later this spring and into summer.
