Davenport Vietnam veteran accused of ‘Stolen Valor’

A Davenport Vietnam veteran has been accused of buying or attempting to buy congressional military decorations and medals without proper authorization.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A Davenport Vietnam veteran has been accused of buying or attempting to buy congressional military decorations and medals without proper authorization.

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa prosecutor specifically names the Combat Infantryman Badge, Purple Heart and Silver Star in court documents.

Seventy-year-old Bob Brooks claims he earned five Purple Hearts and three Silver Stars, along with many other awards during his service. Brooks previously told the Quad-City Times that the Army notified him of his awards long ago and that he presumed the information was correct.

But a military investigation opened after a reporter inquired about his service record. Results of that probe indicated Brooks didn’t earn any Purple Hearts or Silver Stars.

Brooks didn’t return the newspaper’s most recent requests for comment.
