Usually the Speedway Fire Rescue crews put out the fires. But on Sunday they started them.

Crews made up completely of volunteers gathered to practice for emergency situations on the speedway race track.

"We train for car fires, engine fires, gas line fires, fuel fires, if we have fuel spilled on the racetrack or a driver on fire," says Speedway Fire Rescue assistant training officer Tony Ginther.

One of the focuses on Sunday was extrication, getting an injured driver out of a crashed car.

Crews say even though emergency situations don't happen often on the track, it's still important for crews to keep up with their training.

"If we don't train, perfect training, we can't do the job correctly, and that puts people's lives at risk," says Ginther.

In a given race, cars travel up to 100 mph, and those extremely fast speeds put a lot of people at risk, making training days like this even more critical.

Racing season starts next month in April.
