BURLINGTON, Iowa — The Special Olympics Midwest Magic team matched-up against the Burlington police department for a basketball game fundraiser.

"We've been preparing for this, we've been practicing since October. This game only takes place once a year. And to see it all come together is incredible," said Brett Mitchell, head coach of the Midwest Magic.

The basketball game started three years ago as a way to build relationships between Burlington police and the athletes on the Midwest Magic. The event was so popular in it's first year, organizers decided to make it a fundraiser.  On Saturday, over 1,000 community members packed the gym.

"It's a great opportunity for the police department to give back, become part of the community a little bit and a fun day with the midwest magic in an effort to raise money for them to support their athletic endeavors," said Major Darren Grimshaw of the Burlington police department.

The basketball game has been six months in the making for Mitchell. The annual game is promised again next year for those who couldn't attend on Saturday.
