Burglary suspect assaults officer, leads pursuit in stolen cop car

A man arrested for burglary charges in Buffalo, Iowa was able to escape the vehicle, assault an officer and led officials on a chase in the stolen vehicle.

BUFFALO, Iowa — Barry P. Bennett Jr. was arrested by the Buffalo Police Department Friday, March 18, after an officer responded to a call about a robbery in the 11800 block of S. Utah Avenue in Buffalo, Iowa.

Bennett, 38, was being taken to County Oaks facility in a Muscatine County Sheriff's Office transport vehicle but he was able to able to escape by breaking out of the rear window, according to the Buffalo Police Department.

Bennett assaulted the officer in the front seat, took the vehicle's keys and led officers on a pursuit that ended in the 1900 block of Highway 38 in Muscatine County.

Bennett is charged with robbery, theft, felony eluding, assault on jail officer, operating while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license. He is now held in the Scott County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

The officer he assaulted did have minor injuries.

The Buffalo Police Department, Muscatine Police Department and Iowa State Patrol assisted in Bennett's re-capture.
