FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) — A former police chief in southeast Iowa has been acquitted of a domestic abuse assault charge.

A jury on Wednesday found 32-year-old William “B.J.” Sackett, the former Donnellson police chief, not guilty after he was arrested in May 2015 for allegedly assaulting his wife, the Fort Madison Daily Democrat reports.

During the one-day trial, jurors viewed photos that showed blood smeared on his wife’s body, including her leg and throat.

Lee County Sheriff James Sholl previously said Sackett’s wife suffered minor injuries from broken glass and didn’t require hospitalization.

Sackett testified on his own behalf. He said that on the night of the incident his wife had been pulled over for speeding which caused them to argue.

Sackett resigned as police chief two days after being arrested.
