After homes were damaged and some residents were injured, a local fire department is accepting donations to help with storm recovery in the Evergreen Village subdivision area.

Storms that struck Tuesday evening, March 15, 2016, left a path of destruction in the area northeast of Golfmohr Golf Club, near the former Quad City Downs.   Ten people were injured, dozens of homes were damaged, and four homes were destroyed.

The Rapids City Fire Protection District is accepting donations to help families affected by the tornado there.

"Cash, check, food gift cards, and Visa gift cards will allow the families to purchase items that they specifically need," said a statement from Rock Island County Sheriff Gerald Bustos. "No other donations will be accepted."

You can mail or drop off donations at Port Byron Village Hall between 9 a.m. and noon, and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.; you can also mail donations to Rapids City Fire Protection District, ATTN: Tornado Relief, 120 South Main Street, P.O. Box 438, Port Byron, Illinois 61275.
