A common utility payment scam has spread to involve ComEd customers in Morrison, Illinois.

“Individuals are calling ComEd customers and falsely claiming their electric service will be disconnected unless payment is made immediately,” said a statement from Morrison Police Chief Brian Melton.  “These impersonators pressure customers to buy a prepaid credit card and call back to a different number with the personal identification number (PIN) or other personal information.”

The scam has also been reported in recent months by customers in various local communities that are served by MidAmerican Energy.

“They also use a tactic called ‘spoofing’ to manipulate the Caller ID to display a phone number that appears to be a ComEd number,” Melton said.

In early March 2016, Geneseo Police took a report from a resident who received two calls, allegedly from the IRS, demanding money.

Like MidAmerican Energy and other utilities, ComEd representatives do not ask customers to purchase prepaid credit cards to make payment on a bill.

ComEd customer service can be reached at 1-800-334-7661.
