Flags in Iowa and Illinois have been ordered to be flown at half-staff in honor of Nancy Reagan.

Former First Lady Nancy Reagan passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2016. On Monday Iowa Governor Terry Branstad and Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner ordered all flags to be lowered.  Flags were to remain at half-staff until sunset on the day of Internment.

“I had the honor of getting to know Ronald and Nancy Reagan very well,” said Gov. Branstad.  “They were a devoted couple and Nancy was committed to protecting her husband in every way.  Chris and I wish to extend our deepest condolences to the Reagan family in this difficult time.”

All U.S. and state flags under control of the state are included in this order.  Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties and other government subdivisions are encouraged to participate as a sign of respect.

The White House lowered its flags in her honor as well.

editor’s note: this article originally said flags were to remain half-staff until sunset, adds “on the day of Internment” for clarity. Order found here
