Illinois farmers around the Quad Cities are not only working their fields, but fighting hunger across the state. For the sixth straight year, they're donating to the River Bend Foodbank's Bushels for Hunger program.

Farmers gave 5,000 bushels of grain, which will be turned into meals for people living in Rock Island, Henry, Mercer, Whiteside and Stark counties.

The program's director says it's a "no brainer" that farmers are involved.

"We consider ourselves the best people to provide food for this country and it's a good way to support it in our local area," said Jeff Kirwan, director of the Illinois Farm Bureau.

Illinois farmers from the Quad Cities have contributed more than $147,000 worth of grain over the past six years.
