Bernie Sanders’ identity has been confirmed in the 1963 arrest footage during a civil rights protest in Chicago.

Newspaper reports revealed that Sen. Bernie Sanders was arrested during a civil rights protest in 1963 but now Sanders has confirmed that the video and photos are of him.

Chicago's WGN reported on Feb. 17 that a documentary film company found footage of the protest and the arrest of who they believed to be presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. The video was first posted online at 63boycott.kartemquin.com. The footage was taken by then young filmmaker Jerry Temaner, who confirmed that it was Sanders arrested.

Gordon Quinn and Rachel Dixon, of Kartemquin Films, discovered the video while working on a film about the 1963 Chicago Public School Boycott. People were boycotting the treatment of Black Americans as students were being forced into trailers so they couldn't integrate with white students.

The Chicago Tribune released archive photos from the protest Feb. 20 that says Sanders' campaign has confirmed the photos are of his arrest in 1963.  The Chicago Tribune photographer who took the photos, Danny Lyon, also confirmed that the photo is of the Vermont senator.

The photos and video were taken in the South Side of Chicago in 1963 when Sanders was a 21-year-old student at the University of Chicago.
