Davenport City Council supports school district in funding battle with state

The Davenport City Council has now taken a stand in the per-pupil funding debate and will call on state lawmakers to end the funding disparity.

The Davenport City Council has now taken a stand in the per-pupil funding debate and will call on state lawmakers to end the funding disparity.

Earlier in the month, a Davenport alderman, who is also a Davenport School District teacher, proposed that the city council show their full support of the district by getting involved in the issue.

Michael Matson, 8th Ward Alderman for the City of Davenport, said the city council will encourage their state legislators to eliminate the per pupil funding issue.

"Our state folks, legislators and government will see that the local legislators, both on the city side school side, support changing and getting this funding taken care of," said Matson.

Matson also encouraged other people who live in Davenport to do the same.

"Please call your representatives and state senators and everyone," said Matson. "Email them, call them, tell them to please change the formula so that all children are treated the same."

Next week, Davenport School Board members and district students will travel to Des Moines to meet with state lawmakers on the funding disparity.
