Eastbound lanes of Interstate 80 were closed for several hours near mile marker 29 after a semi slid off the road, crashed through the guardrail, and caught fire.
The accident happened at 4:20 a.m. Monday morning, February 8, 2016, according to Illinois State Police.
The Atkinson Fire Chief said it appeared the slick road conditions may have caused the crash, and that the trailer was carrying dairy products when it caught fire.
Both the driver and the passenger were reportedly okay; everything inside the trailer was destroyed.
Both eastbound lanes were still closed at 6:30 a.m. Traffic was being rerouted to Route 6 at mile marker 26.
