Davenport teen killed in Eldridge crash

An 18-year-old died, and two other teens were hurt, when the vehicle they were in crashed in Eldridge, Iowa.

The three young men were in a 2014 Chevrolet Cruze headed northbound on 155th Avenue when the vehicle went off the road just north of Slopertown Road just before 1 a.m. Sunday, February 7, 2016, according to a preliminary report from the Iowa State Patrol.

The car went into the ditch on the east side of the road and struck a culvert, which caused “significant front end damage,” the report said. The car came to rest in a field and immediately caught fire.

Mitchell Hayes, 18, of Davenport, died as a result of his injuries from the crash. The report said Hayes was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.

The 19-year-old driver and one 18-year-old passenger were taken by ambulance to a local hospital. The report said both of them were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
