A pedestrian was struck and killed by a train in Morrison, Illinois overnight, police say.

The Union Pacific Railway reported the incident at about 2:55 a.m. Sunday, January 31, 2016, according to a statement from the Morrison Police Department.  The train had been heading eastbound on the north set of tracks when it struck a pedestrian just east of the Cherry Street railroad crossing in Morrison.

At the Cherry Street crossing there are businesses north of the tracks and homes south of the tracks.

Police say the pedestrian, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene by Whiteside County Coroner Joe McDonald.

According to the police department’s Facebook page, several railroad crossings were closed as officers investigated the incident throughout the night.  All railroad crossings re-opened around 7 a.m.
