Investigators were trying to determine what caused a 24-year-old man to lose control of his vehicle, traveling off the road and over a steep embankment before landing in a creek in rural Stockton, Illinois.

The crash was reported just after 11 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2016, on Illinois Route 78 South about 2500 feet north of Goodmiller Road.

Police said 24-year-old Maxwell Tynan was northbound on Route 78 when he lost control and his vehicle swerved across the southbound lane of traffic before it went off the road.

The vehicle then “traveled about 400 feet across a field, and went off of an embankment and came to rest in a creek,” according to the crash report from the Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Department.

“Fire department personnel had to transport (the driver) straight up the 10-foot embankment to an awaiting ambulance,” the report said.  The ambulance took Tynan to a helicopter, which took him to a hospital in Rockford, Illinois.

The cause of the crash remained under investigation.
