Volunteers from the American Red Cross went door to door in Rock Falls Saturday, January 23, 2016, hanging fliers with fire prevention tips.

The fliers included information about how to get a free smoke detector installed in your home.  The effort comes after five family members were killed in a house fire last week.

Mike O'Brien, a Red Cross volunteer says the recent tragedy has made people in the area more aware of the importance of fire safety.

"Studies show you have two minutes to get out of your house when there's a fire. So the sooner you are notified there is a fire in your home, your survival rates are that much better," he says.

The American Red Cross plans to reduce the number of fire related deaths and injuries by 25 percent over the next several years. The Red Cross plans to give this information out to a number of different Illinois communities this year.
