His attorneys say former Illinois representative Dennis Hastert has been unable to prepare for his Feb. 29 sentencing because of his health problems.

CHICAGO (AP) — Lawyers for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert have asked a federal judge to delay sentencing in his hush-money case because of his recent hospitalization for a stroke and other health problems.

A Friday court filing says the Illinois Republican has been unable to prepare for his Feb. 29 sentencing because of his health problems.

The motion to put off sentencing says Hastert was released from hospital Jan. 15. He was admitted the first week of November.

The filing says he will require up to six weeks of home care and rehabilitation. It says he needs assistance, walks with a leg brace and must use a walker.

Hastert was accused in May of evading banking regulations as part of a plan to pay hush money to conceal “prior misconduct.”
