The River Bend Foodbank  is one step closer to ending hunger in the Quad Cities.

The organization donated close to 10,000 meals last year, which is almost half of the meals needed to reduce the meal gap in their service area.

Food distributed from River Bend is provided by local businesses and members in the community. Once the food is collected, representatives from food pantries across the area are able to take the groceries back to their communities for people in need.

Mike Miller, the executive director of River Bend says one common mistake people make at home is throwing away food that is still eatable.

"As people are going through their pantries and they are finding things that you all call expiration dates, please don't throw that away, donate that to the foodbank or your local pantry. We can get that to someone in need while it is still safe to eat."

Last year the River Bend's Board of Directors and leadership team set a goal to triple the number of meals distributed over the next 10 years. The ultimate goal is to end hunger in eastern Iowa and western Illinois.

Although the ten thousand meals given last year brought the company closer to their goal, River Bend says they plan to work harder to recruit more volunteers and donors to reach their overall target.
