Police identify man shot by deputy while trying to flee officers in reportedly stolen Hummer

A suspect was shot by an officer after trying to flee from police in a reportedly stolen vehicle.

A man was shot by an officer after trying to flee from police in a reportedly stolen vehicle.

Almost 30 minutes after a blue 2008 Hummer was reported stolen on Friday evening, January 15, 2016, a Muscatine County Sheriff's deputy saw the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop on Highway 61, according to a statement from Muscatine Police Department's Lt. Tim Hull.   The Hummer had been reported stolen from the Guadalajara Restaurant on 2nd Street in Muscatine shortly after 10 p.m.

With assistance from the Muscatine Police Department, the Hummer was pulled over in the Pearl City Inn/Best Western parking lot, Hull said.

"The vehicle then attempted to leave the scene and the Hummer struck several vehicles parked in the hotel lot including one of the fully marked law enforcement vehicles," read Hull's statement.  "Several shots were fired by law enforcement."

Hull's statement said that the driver suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to an area hospital for treatment before being transferred to another. He was later identified as 41-year-old Timothy Seefeldt.

Seefeldt was shot once in the upper torso, according to a statement from the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS).  His injury was not life-threatening.

It was later determined that only the deputy fired his weapon, according to an investigation by the Iowa DPS' Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation. The names of the deputy and police officer involved were not expected to be released until they had been interviewed.

If you have any information about the incident you are asked to call Lt. Tim Hull at 563-263-9922 Ext. 608. Callers may remain anonymous.
