Rock Falls bank robbery suspect faces up to 20 years in prison

The man convicted of robbing the Rock Falls First Federal Savings Bank now faces up to 20 years in prison and up to a quarter-million dollars in fines.

After a three-day trial, a federal court jury found 47-year-old Conrad Gonzalez guilty of bank robbery January 7, 2016.  Conrad was accused of robbing First Federal Savings Bank, at 701 1st Avenue in Rock Falls,  on October 30, 2013.

“Gonzales approached a bank teller and handed her a note demanding money,” said a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.  At the time of the robbery, police said a weapon was implied but not displayed.

“When the teller attempted to retrieve the note from the counter, Gonzalez said, ‘That was a stupid thing to do,'” and took the note back,” the statement said.  The teller handed $1,870 to Gonzalez and he walked out of the bank.

No one was hurt.

Gonzalez faces a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison, followed by up to three years of supervised release, a fine of up to $250,000, and full restitution for the money taken from the bank.

Gonzalez was scheduled for sentencing April 19, 2016.
