A Dixon man’s apparent attempt to scare three kids may have backfired, landing the man in the Lee County Jail.

Stanley Szydelko, 42, called police to report someone trespassing in his warehouse just after 8 p.m. Friday, December 18, 2015.    By the time officers arrived, Szydelko told them he found three juveniles inside the warehouse, according to a statement from the Dixon, Illinois Police Department.

“(O)fficers learned Szydelko had entered the building within minutes of the juveniles entering the building,” the statement said.

“Szydelko fired one shot into the air with a firearm, while in the vicinity of the three juveniles, and threatened the juveniles,” the statement said.  Police said Szydelko does not have a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification (FOID) card.

Police returned to Szydelko’s property Monday, December 21; that’s when they executed search warrants and arrested Szydelko.

Court records showed Szydelko was charged with three felony counts of aggravated assault/discharge of a firearm, one felony count of reckless discharge of a firearm endangering another person, and misdemeanor charges of possession of a firearm and possession of ammunition without a valid FOID card.

Szydelko was held without bond in the Lee County Jail.
