Man Dead After Police Chase in Clinton County, Iowa

A man is dead after a police chase that started with a disturbance complaint and ended with the man taking his own life.

Updated December 20th, 2015 at 9:00pm: A man is dead after a police chase that started with a disturbance complaint and ended with the man taking his own life.

According to the Clinton County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to 4492 140th Street in Clinton  for a "complaint of a disturbance" at 1:17pm on Sunday, December 20th, 2015.

"When the first deputy sheriff arrived, he was met by a white male pointing a handgun at him," said a press release.

The man then drove away in a white Dodge pickup and the deputy followed. The pursuit took place throughout northeastern Clinton County and ended in the 400 block of East 11th Street in DeWitt near the high school.

"Officers surrounded the vehicle and a trained negotiator made contact with the driver," said the press release. "At one point the driver discharged a handgun out the passenger side window but officers did not return fire. Officers could see the driver waving the handgun around inside the vehicle."

At 3:31pm, officers heard a gunshot come from inside the truck. When they approached it, they found the driver unconscious with a wound in his chest. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation. An autopsy has been scheduled for this week.

EARLIER STORY: Part of a main roadway that runs through DeWitt, Iowa was blocked off to traffic during a reported "standoff situation."

A spokesperson from the DeWitt Police Department said that officers were still on scene Sunday afternoon, December 20, 2015 where the situation was happening.  Around 4:30 p.m. officers still had 11th Street from East 3rd Avenue to the eastern entry of the high school blocked to traffic.

The school is located on the east end of town near where 11th Street turns into Old Highway 30.

The Clinton County Sheriff's Department was heading the investigation, the spokesperson said; the Department of Criminal Investigation was also on scene.
