Freeport man charged with murder after woman shot and killed in Lanark

According to the Carroll County Sheriff's Department, it happened around 2:16am on Saturday, December 5th on West Locust Street in Lanark, Illinois.

Investigators said when police arrived, they found the body of a woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.  This is the first homicide in Lanark since the late 1800, according to a report from Sauk Valley news.

Freeport Police Department arrested 49-year-old Morgan D. Hake of Freeport, Illinois, about 45 minutes after the victim was found.  Morgan Hake was taken to the Carroll County Jail and he has been charged with first-degree murder.

The name of the victim was not immediately released.  Multiple media reports indicated she was Hake's wife, 46-year-old Suzanne Hake, and the Carroll County Sheriff's Office later confirmed the victim's identity.

Jail records showed Morgan Hake remained held in the Carroll County Jail as of Monday, December 7.  Court records showed he was scheduled for a preliminary hearing on the murder charge December 15.  His bond was set at $5 million.
