An Iowa man was hospitalized after the tractor-trailer he was driving was hit by a car traveling the wrong way on U.S. Route 34.

An Iowa man was hospitalized after the tractor-trailer he was driving was hit by a car traveling the wrong way on U.S. Route 34.

A silver Mitsubishi Eclipse was westbound in the eastbound lane of Route 34 at 160th Avenue when the crash happened at about 4 a.m. Monday, November 30, 2015, according to Illinois State Police.

A tractor-trailer swerved to avoid the Eclipse, but the tractor-trailer was struck in the front and on the passenger side, police said.  Both drivers wore seat belts at the time of the crash, and no other vehicles were involved.

The tractor-trailer driver, a 28-year-old man from Chariton, Iowa, was taken to a hospital in Monmouth for treatment of minor injuries.

The Eclipse driver, 25-year-old Troy Simmons of Shelby, North Carolina, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, police said.
