A village northeast of the Quad Cities may file for bankruptcy.

Hillsdale is in Rock Island County and has a population of about 500. Its police force is already feeling the effects of a budget pinch. Two or three part time officer positions were eliminated recently, leaving only a part time police chief on the payroll. The village's attorney says a combination of rising costs for insurance coupled with a lack of money from the state is to blame for the budget crunch.

"There's always a concern between cutting expenses and cutting services. Nobody wants services cut but everybody wants expenses cut. So they're walking a thin line on trying to accomplish both at this time," said Virgil Thurman, Hillsdale Village Attorney.

Thurman says filing for bankruptcy would be an absolute last resort that wouldn't be needed yet for months. Thurman also says the Rock Island County Sheriff's Department is investigating the village clerk regarding sanitation finances.
