An injured dog found in a hotel dumpster in Clinton this week has died, and the woman who tried to keep the dog alive is hoping that police can find the person who may have left it there.

Five days isn't enough time for Samantha Doty to move on from what she's seen.

Doty was working at the Regency Inn on Monday when she got a phone call from housekeeping. A family staying at the hotel found a dog in a dumpster, wrapped in a plastic bag.

"It was one of those things, when I got the phone call, it's like what? Where was the dog? Words can't express how you feel when you hear something like that," Doty said.

Minutes later, she went from hearing about it to seeing it for herself.

A small chihuahua, who couldn't move.

The first thing she noticed were the cuts on its neck.

"They were nothing deep," Doty said.

It was enough to make her suspicious about what happened. Doty ran to her car and got a bed for the dog, then called police. She did what she could to keep the dog alive until animal control arrived.

"I was trying to comfort the dog the best I could. I tried getting some water in her through a straw. She could follow me with her eyes, but that's about it. It was heartbreaking," Doty said.

Animal control took the dog to a local vet. Doty found out on Wednesday that the dog had a broken neck and died.

"It made my heart sink that I found out it was true that she did have to be put down. It's not right," Doty said.

Officers in Clinton are still working to figure out if it's a case of neglect or abuse.

Doty only knew the dog for a few minutes, but she says it was enough time to make a connection. She's hoping for answers to what happened, and soon.

Clinton Police Captain Tom Bohle says no arrests have been made. He also says that if you have any information that could help their investigation into what happened to the dog, call the Clinton Police Department.
