Political costumes prove popular pick for Halloween 2015

More than a quarter million adults are expected to choose a political character for this year’s Halloween costume.

More than a quarter million adults are expected to choose a political character for this year's Halloween costume.

And although the next presidential election is still over a year away, according to the National Retail Federation, political costumes will be among the top 10 most popular picks for 2015.

At Spirit Halloween in Moline, manager Lisa Daman said Donald Trump masks have been a strong seller this year.

"We've sold quite a few, actually," said Daman.

According to Spirit Halloween's 'Presidential Index,' mask sales have accurately predicted the past five presidential elections.

In 1996, Bill Clinton masks accounted for 71 percent of sales, while Bob Dole masks sold at just 29 percent. In 2000, George W. Bush outpaced Al Gore with 57 percent of mask sales, and he topped Kerry in 2004 with 65 percent. In 2008, Barack Obama had 60 percent of mask sales over John McCain's 40 percent, and Obama scored 60 percent again in 2012 over Mitt Romney.

Daman, though, isn't convinced that these sales have any predictive power.

"No," said Daman with a laugh. "They just wanna support who they wanna be behind, you know? Which is kinda cool."

Daman said the most popular costumes in the Quad Cities this year are a little more traditional, with witches, zombies and superheroes coming out on top.
