"She came into my office and told me quietly that she just locked the door and there's something going on," Kelly's Medical manager Lorrie Guthrie said.

Guthrie works at Kelly's Medical, in the building only a few feet away. She says her co-workers and two customers stayed inside for about 20 minutes while everything developed right in front of their window. Police were on scene in three minutes.  The building is also home to a law office and to a military recruiter.

"We felt safe, I guess. The response that occurred so quickly was amazing. One squad car to a whole fleet of people," Guthrie said.

Just a few miles away in Bettendorf, officers say they were called to a business on Utica Ridge and Crow Creek where they say a man matching the shooter's description; the man took his own life according to police.

"The suspect was standing in the parking lot of the business with a gun in his hand. When the suspect saw the officers he fired one round to his head. It was a fatal wound," according to a statement from Davenport Police.

"It was surreal that something that serious happened around us, and for us just to go back to work did not feel right," Guthrie said.

Guthrie will join her friends back at work Tuesday, but she says the emotional toll of this day will be there as well.

She says the Kelly's Medical corporate offices are offering coping assistance for anyone who wants the help.

Investigators haven't released the name of the man who died, or given a motive for the shooting at the law firm.
