The Moline City Council is expected to vote in November to finalize hiring a Bettendorf firm to build a new wall around the John Deere Mansion.

The retaining wall has been crumbling for years, and parts of it have fallen onto the sidewalk and street. When it rains, mud slides down the hill onto 12th street below.

The price tag is just over $500,000. The city will be on the hook for $300,000, a former owner of the property will pay just over $200,000.

General Constructors, Inc will be awarded the bid and is expected to start work after the first of the  year.

The new wall will be fortified with metal and concrete.

"With this wall, we are drilling down anchoring into the sub-service ground with large steel beams and supporting the earth with timbers stacked inside those beams, then placing a concrete wall after that," said company president Dan Ward.

Ward says the concrete will be stamped to look more like rock.
