People inside a Burlington, Iowa hotel evacuated when a fire set off smoke alarms inside the building.

The fire was reported at Fairfield Inn on N. Roosevelt Avenue just before 3 p.m. on Monday, October 12, 2015.  According to Fire Marshal Mark Crooks, smoke was coming from the west end of the hotel and fire alarms were going off.

When Burlington firefighters arrived, Crooks said they found a small fire in a decorative column near an exit door. They were able to put out the fire using water on their truck. Ten firefighters responded and were assisted on mutual aid by four West Burlington firefighters.

Crooks said the most likely started from “improperly discarded smoke material.”  The fire didn’t spread, but smoke did travel throughout the first floor and into the attic.

There were no reported injuries and damage was estimated to be less than $1,000, according to Crooks.

Firefighters were on scene for nearly an hour and a half.
