A construction project in Rock Island will close a portion of 5th Avenue.

Crews will be working on an underground sanitary relief storage tank on 5th Ave. between 39th Street and 42nd Street. Traffic was expected to be detoured around the project onto 42nd Street and 6th Avenue (see map below).

This project is part of Rock Island’s Long Term Control Plan, according to a statement from the Public Works Director Randall Tweet.

“When completed, the storage tanks will relieve the overloading of the area’s sanitary sewers and will help to alleviate periodic overflows at the Farmall Viaduct during wet weather events,” said Tweet.

The project was expected to be complete in the spring of 2016.
