Opposites attract at Swanson's Barber Shop these days.

Cubs and Cards flags flank the Galesburg business.

"Once you become a Cub fan, you're addicted and just love it," said owner Sherrill Swanson.

Swanson, the die-hard Cubs fan,  joined forces with Cards fan Ronda Spicher five years ago.

"Sometimes this whole place is filled with Cub fans," she said.  "They just pick on me right and left."

Customers like Dusty Henry get caught in the middle.

"She's been shaking all morning," he said.  "She's nervous."

A Cubs fan, Dusty is willing to trust a redbird with his haircut.

"Be nice to me," he cautioned.

Their workplace at 106 E. Main Street is like a shrine to both teams.

"We've made it pretty evenly balanced," Sherrill said.  "What's red on that side, we have blue on this side."

There's memorabilia galore, ceremonial scissors and two Harry Caray bobbleheads.

Caray gets equal time because he called games for both teams.

Ronda, of course, has the upper hand because of the Cardinals' numerous championships.

"If I see something interesting, I feel for him," she continued.  "They don't have too much fame over there."

There's even an imaginary line in the barber shop to separate the two rivals.

"I'm not allowed to pass this pipe with anything," Swanson joked.

The Cubs-Cards rivalry seems to reach from baseball to barbering.  Their barber pole is even red and blue.

They've also got red and blue brooms ready for a sweep.

The losing team's supporter will get to clean up.

Most of all, it's fun with good friends.

"Ronda's big world championship pennant will be replaced next week with a blue one," Swanson said.

"That's why I have broad shoulders," Ronda countered.  "I can deal with it."

At Swanson's Barber Shop, renewing a rivalry that just might take one of these teams to the World Series.
