They're simply walking to make a difference.

On Saturday, September 26th, 2015, more than 1,000 people participating in the NAMIWalk at Ben Butterworth Park in Moline.

NAMI stands for the "National Alliance on Mental Illness" and the NAMIWalk raises money to provide free education and support programs for families living with a serious mental health condition. NAMI-Greater Mississippi Valley represents six counties on both sides of the Mississippi River - Muscatine, Clinton, Scott Counties in Iowa and Mercer, Henry, Rock Island Counties in Illinois.

Organizers say NAMIWalk is a fun event that supports serious work in the area.

"Unfortunately, there's been a stigma associated with mental health for many years, so we're putting it out there and letting people know it's nothing to be ashamed of," said Denise Beenk. "It's very important to raise awareness for the community that it's a really important component of overall health for a person."

Organizers say more than $100,000 was raised during Saturday's NAMIWalk. This was the 12th year for the event.
