Westbound I-74 reopens north of Galesburg after 11 hour closure

Westbound traffic on Interstate 74 was being diverted away from a semi that rolled over, spilling its load onto the roadway.

Westbound traffic on Interstate 74 is back open now after a semi that rolled over, spilling its load onto the roadway. The interstate was back open around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2015.

The semi was heading westbound on I-74 and lost control in the construction zone at mile marker 39.5, according to a statement from the Illinois State Police.

When the crash happened, the semi, driven by 43-year-old Alan Greene, lost its load "causing total lane blockage, according to the statement. It happened at 6:40 p.m. Wednesday, September 23, 2015.

Traffic was being rerouted from I-74 west to US 34 west, then to US 150 north to IL 17 east, and back onto I-74.  Police said they expected the cleanup to be "extensive" and that it would take several hours.

Police say there were no injuries reported.

The driver was off route from his permit, according to Illinois State Police.  The driver was charged for being off route, overweight, and with improper lane usage.

The semi was an over sized load wind turbine column section, according to state police.
