National Voter Registration Day was founded in 2012 after more than 6-million Americans said they didn’t vote because they either missed the registration deadline or didn’t know how to register, according to the NVRD website.

NVRD, observed September 22, 2015, is powered by Rock the Vote, which offers an online portal to register to vote. Their goal is to increase awareness of voter registration opportunities.

“This isn’t about supporting candidates or political parties. It’s about making sure our voice is heard!” said a page on the website dedicated to listing hundreds of voter registration events coast-to-coast.

The only area event listed on the NVRD website was a “Put Voter Registration on you Shopping List” event hosted by the Muscatine County League of Women Voters at the Muscatine Hy-Vee store.

However, you can register to vote any time.

Illinois voters can check the status of their voter registration, and register to vote, using the Illinois State Board of Elections’ online voter application website – click here.

Iowa voters can register to vote at their polling place on Election Day. You can also register any time by completing a voter registration form and submitting it to your county auditor or to any Iowa DMV office. You’ll need proof of identity and proof of residency.
